North Lantau Hospital

Wayfinding strategy and design for ArchSD

The North Lantau Hospital in Hong Kong was built to fulfil the needs of the Tung Chung district and community. The complex organisation of a large hospital often makes it difficult for both staff and users to find their way efficiently, and a hospital is often the scene of great stress. Therefore, we were commissioned to develop a strong wayfinding strategy and signage design for the project.

The challenge

The hospital is a seven-storey building, a symmetrical crescent shaped block with identical floor plans and multiple entry points. It was crucial to devise a clear wayfinding strategy so that visitors wouldn’t be disorientated and could find their way around efficiently and comfortably. To represent the professionalism and forward-looking approach of the hospital, the signage design needed to be attractive, as well as functional.

Our Approach

We initially arranged meetings with the hospital users to better understand their operational needs, specific circulation patterns and problems they encounter with their current environment. During the design process, we discussed the users’ concerns with the architect, leading to layout plans and signage locations being adjusted – and so the wayfinding strategy became an integral part of the architectural design.

We developed a visual language inspired by the theme of the awareness ribbon, giving a friendly and caring touch to the clinical environment. This concept could be applied to many applications and uses.

Large 'folded ribbon’ floor numbers were located near the lifts on each floor.

Each department has a specific colour, assigned by the Hospital Authority. We chose to work with a neutral colour scheme for the signage elements in order for the signs to integrate with the interior design as well to contrast with the departments’ colours.

To ensure a smooth circulation flow in the A&E department, a numbering system is adopted for each 'check point' in order for walk-in patients to easily identify their destination.
