Yidan Center is a new education-focused complex in Qianhai, Shenzhen, bringing together learning, research, enterprise and public life.
As its branding partner, we stepped into a project with unusual ambition: to create a new platform where education, technology, culture and public life could actively shape one another.
The challenge was that its ambition was deliberately open-ended in a field that will keep changing, its brand therefore had to articulate a clear point of view without closing down what the Center could become.
We needed to give conviction to something still in formation: a brand clear enough to lead, and open enough to keep learning.
We started our search for a unifying brand concept that could hold all of the Yidan Center’s ambitions together. These ambitions span a wide variety of areas, from developing learning spaces and conducting research to establishing an educational ecosystem and testing new ideas in the real world.
Rather than defining a fixed vision of future education, we focused on the condition Yidan Center was built for: constant change. Its role is to keep responding, experimenting and evolving as new possibilities emerge.
This led us to Future Shapes.
The idea turns uncertainty into momentum. It gives Yidan Center a clear strategic direction while leaving space for the institution, its programs and its impact to keep evolving over time.
More than a tagline, Future Shapes became the organizing idea for the brand: open-ended, active and built for what comes next.
Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, Yidan Center draws on the canyon as its architectural concept, envisioning a fluid landscape where people, activities and ideas meet. We saw the opportunity to carry that idea beyond architecture, turning it into the central metaphor of the brand. A canyon is never static. It is shaped over time by movement, pressure and accumulation; paths converge, diverge and continue in unexpected directions. That made it a natural expression of Yidan Center’s view of education: layered, open-ended and continually in formation. We developed this into The Living Canyon, a brand idea that translates spatial connection into intellectual and human connection, extending the spirit of the architecture into the wider platform.
The circle became the simplest expression of that logic, acting as a single unit that could gather, expand, intersect and generate new forms. From one circle, many possibilities emerge. Together, they create a flexible language for innovation, humanity, learning, culture and exchange by uniting these distinct ideas within one living system. The result is a brand that grows from the architecture, while carrying its meaning far beyond the building itself.
